Nails of LA

We love and appreciate the hard work of manicurists, but as we learn to adapt to the culture of our “new normal,” some of us still feel uncomfortable sitting in the salon chair — and that's totally understandable. So, if you'd rather not head to the nail salon but don't have the expert ability to create your own gel manis or DIY acrylic nail sets, there's an easier (and much cheaper) alternative: press-on nails.

Best Press-On Nails

You may be familiar with the clunkier fake French press-on nails from your childhood but trust us: the new sets out there are impressive. With trendy styles, different shapes, and more natural-looking fits, there are tons of press-on nail options for you to choose from. But first, there are some things you should know about how to properly use them to avoid damaging your nails.

Will Press-On Nails Damage Your Nails?

According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, M.D., of LaJolla Dermatology and Laser Surgery Center, press-on nails are perfect for those days you just can’t make it to the salon and you need a quick fix. She recommends using press-on nails occasionally and notes they’re only damaging you are too rough when removing them. She explains, “Reserve it for periodic use and don’t overdo it. Anything that puts a strain on the nail can end up damaging it especially if it’s repeated.”

When you're using press-on nails, you'll want to take a few precautions. Shirazi shared her go-to tips for safely applying press-on nails:

    • Avoid repeated use as the removal process multiple times can be damaging depending on the type of glue.
    • Oftentimes, you'll need to soak the press-on nail in pure acetone to remove the adhesive, and this can be very irritating and drying for nails and cuticles.
    • Be sure to use a hydrating balm or hand cream to help replenish any lost moisture.
    • Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes because nail polish and acrylic nail materials can irritate your delicate skin.

Want to get in on these foolproof nail gems? We researched and found 15 favorite press-on nails we use and others we plan on adding to our shopping cart, stat. Our recommendations are made from non-toxic materials, feature intricate designs, and are from reputable brands we know and love, including KISS, OPI, and Glamnetic.

      Static Nails

When it comes to press-on nails, Static Nails' array of colors, shapes, and perfect fits just can't be beaten. Each nail kit comes with just about everything you need to create the perfect DIY express mani: a mini file to shape out your natural nails, a tough-as-nails glue that keeps your claws secure for up to a whopping 18 days, and 24 nails in various sizes to fit each and every nail bed.

No matter which style you pick from, their lot will impress you, but we love how natural their almond-shaped sets look. “They look as good if not better than salon nails, and they stay on just as long,” says one Nordstrom reviewer.

Other Nordstrom shoppers have relied on these press-on nails during Covid-related salon shutdowns and highlight the different size nails as a win. They say the included glue is fast-drying and long-lasting yet easy to remove when soaked in hot water and soap rather than acetone.

Static Nails advises placing a large dot of glue on your natural nails for the press-on nails to last up to a week. You can extend their wearability by adding extra glue to the back of the fake nails. Be sure to press down for 25 seconds to help lock your faux nails in place.

Our team loves all things Olive & June, so it's no wonder these long, almond-shaped press-on nails caught our eye. You can choose from almost 30 styles, but this hot pink ombré set is perfect for spring and summer days.

These nails are made from 94 percent post-consumer recycled materials and come with non-toxic nail glue that promises to last at least seven days, to boot.

Olive & June reviewers adore these easy-to-apply nails and say they look similar to professional gel manicures and last around eight days. They're so simple to apply that one mom bought them to help her 12-year-old daughter from biting her natural nails.

      Mani Me

We'll admit it: The cheeky name spoke to our inner wino, but the quality and modern design of these press-on nails earned them a place on this list.

After selecting your design and submitting five pics of your hands, ManiMe will 3D print a sheet of 15 gel nails that are 100% custom-made for you. And don't worry, these nails are made from toxic-free materials and will last up to 10 days.

Use the included peel pads to help remove any lingering grime from your natural nails. Next, apply a base coat if your nails are weak. Otherwise, peel and stick each 3D printed nail on, but be sure to leave a sliver of space by your cuticle, advises Mani Me. Press out wrinkles and hold each nail for 30 seconds, then fold over any excess nail and file down to your desired length.

      Glamnetic

Glamnetic is known for its array of magnetic eyelashes, but its stylish press-on nails are worth using, too.

For starters, each kit comes with 12 nail sizes, ensuring you always have the proper fit each time you use these reusable nails. They are also waterproof and last up to 21 days, so you'll definitely get your money's worth.

These semi-transparent nails feature neon yellow tips that are on-trend for summer, although we could see ourselves wearing these nails 365 days a year.

Ulta reviewers consider these nails quick to apply, mess-free, and durable like costly acrylic nails. Applying them is simple: You'll want to use the prep pad, dot on glue to your real nails, then press down for 30 seconds to ensure a proper fit, advises the brand.

      MAGIC PRESS Nails
      Dashing Diva

The gradient nail trend has been one of our favorite nail looks, but these nails take it a step further with their long length, coffin shape, and a modern take on classic French.

Although they'll only last up to seven days, given the price, you really can't complain since they are glueless, chip-resistant, and easy to remove.

To apply, just peel off the clear backing film and press down the faux nails, starting in the middle, then pressing down from left to right. Removal is genuinely easy and quick — just soak your nails in pure water for 1 minute before peeling them off.
