Susteau’s Moondust Hair Wash Is the Future of Sustainable Haircare

This powder-to-liquid shampoo is basically space dust.

There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Susteau Moondust Hair Wash

The Tester: Danielle St. Pierre, a long-haired lady looking to cut back on wasteful hair products

The Brief: Liquid shampoo and conditioner are made up of over 80% water. Read that again! This means that in addition to the single-use plastic bottle your shampoo and conditioner are most likely packaged in, these products also require quite a bit of water during both formulation and bottling. Sounds wasteful, right?

If you're looking to cut back on waste in your grooming products, you've likely already tried shampoo bars, solid perfumes, or even reusable Q-tips. Now, thanks to futureproof haircare brand Susteau, a line of vegan, cruelty-free, powder-to-liquid shampoo and conditioner called Moondust Hair Wash exists. It kind of changes everything.

A winner of Allure's 2020 Best of Beauty Awards, Susteau's Moondust Hair Wash has also scored glowing reviews from editors across the beautysphere, from InStyle to Coveteur. This waterless shampoo has been blowing up so much, in fact, that I knew I needed to get my hands on it ASAP and put it to the ultimate test: Will it effectively wash my very long, very wild hair? The answer is a resounding yes ... oh, hell yes.

Texturally, this powder shampoo resembles crumbly baking soda in the hand with a slight grit. To use, you simply pour out about a dime-sized amount onto wet hands in the shower, add water, and rub your hands together to activate its squeaky-clean ingredient list. I was actually shooketh by how creamy and rich this shampoo felt in my hand, after first doubting its chameleon-like powder-to-liquid claims. This stuff lathers up but doesn’t have that extra sudsy, fake, sulfate-loaded feel of thick drugstore shampoo. It’s moisturizing. It’s light. It’s just enough of everything and nothing more.

When applied to my scalp first and then down through my ends, the formula actually slides easily through wet hair. The shampoo also rinses clean without any extra effort, leaving my tresses perfectly smooth and clean afterward. I also used the Susteau Moondust Conditioner for the first time during my last hair-wash routine, and as you can see from the pics ... my hair was SHINY. And felt clean, light, and fresh. These products have just a hint of natural fragrance, but I love that the formula smelled neutral and clean.

Closing Argument: Better for traveling, better for the planet, and better than the single-use drugstore bottle you have in your shower right now, I really can't recommend Susteau's Moondust Hair Wash highly enough. It'll be the best $29 you've spent on your hair probably ever.
