10 Eco-Friendly Diapers That Won’t Crush Your Budget

Being concerned about the environment doesn't mean you also need to go broke.

When my son was a baby, environmentally friendly diapers were a very new thing. Basically, there was only one popular natural brand, and it was prohibitively expensive. These eco-friendly diapers weren't great. They were leaky and smelled strange, and honestly, they weren't my favorite — we were a big-box-brand family.

At that time, the focus was all on chlorine, the chemical used in the moisture-wicking interior of regular diapers, and its potential health and environmental risks. Fast-forward to now, and the science is still sketchy. There has yet to be a large-scale study published on this topic, and preliminary evidence from ongoing studies, like this one from Seattle Children's Hospital, isn't conclusive. Even the environmental impact of using disposable diapers isn't as clear as you'd think.

The Best Eco-Friendly Diapers

    What to Consider

Luckily, modern brands have stepped up to the plate, developing eco-friendlier, disposable diapers that omit toxins and potentially red-flag materials. These brands are also far more readily available and affordable than the natural diapers of yesteryear, making them much more accessible to concerned parents. Parents can get great diapers that are truly absorbent and comfortable, all while keeping an eye toward the environment.

They do come at a premium, though. Overall, these diapers are between 25 and 100% more expensive than traditional diapers, which might make them out of reach for many families. I've done my best to present you with a range of styles and prices, all with comparable quality. The major differences will be regarding cut, materials, and brand.

For this guide, I've researched all of these diaper brands, talked to moms who have used them, and read dozens of consumer review sites to bring you the best eco-friendly diapers available right now.

    Cult Favorite
    The Diaper (6-Pack)
    Coterie

Parents who love eco-friendly diapers love Coterie's diapers. We learned about the brand on TikTok, of all places — moms and dads are raving about the ease of Coterie's monthly subscription system, the quality of their diapers, their distinct lack of plastic diaper smell, and the fact that they are all-white — no cutesy patterns here!

The newborn diapers have a stripe down the center that lets you know if your baby's wet, just like many other brands. But other than that, there's no design whatsoever. The diapers survive long nights, bumpy car rides, and massive poop explosions with great confidence, which is perhaps the best part about them.

    Pampers

Parents who are fans of the Pampers traditional brand will love Pampers Pure Diapers. They are duplicates of the gold-standard Pampers Swaddlers, sans some of the chemicals.

The addition of shea butter to the lining is a nice touch for sensitive, tiny tushies. If you're giving diapers as a shower gift, these might be your best bet.

    3
    Best Value
    Diapers (224-Count)
    Dyper

Dyper will deliver 224 eco-friendly, toxin-free diapers to your home for just $68. We'll let that sink in. It sounds too good to be true — but believe it. The diapers themselves are also simple and undecorated. They hold up really well against leaks, and they're extra soft and smooth.

Even if you're buying Dyper Diapers through Amazon, the price is higher, but still comparable.

    4
    Best for Bigger Thighs
    Biodegradable Bamboo Disposable Diapers (50-Count)
    Andy Pandy
    Now 12% off

If it weren’t for a friend’s personal recommendation, we might not have given Andy Pandy's biodegradable, toxin-free diapers a second glance. But one huge bonus is that they are fantastic for a subset of babies that are often overlooked: the extra juicy-thighed babies.

These diapers are made from biodegradable bamboo material, and they are free of phthalates, fragrances, chlorine, PVC, and latex. They are as close to nature as disposable diapers can get.

    5
    Best for Sensitive Skin
    Nature Premium Eco-Friendly Baby Diapers
    Bambo Nature

Bambo Nature is another brand that’s a runaway favorite on Amazon: The brand has raked in 2,000 five-star reviews. They’re known for being extremely breathable, while still keeping your kids’ mess all to themselves.

They're vegan, latex-free, and supported by the Forest Stewardship Council. A package of 24 diapers will cost you $13.50.

    6
    Fully Recyclable
    Nappychat Premium Performance Eco Diapers
    Mum&You

Mum & You diapers are recycled and — unbelievably — recyclable. They're also buttery-soft. (I tested one against my face, and was highly surprised.)

These eco-friendly diapers can also hold a lot of liquid. I poured over half a can of soda into the diaper before it even started to puddle. The designs are cute, and the attachment Velcro is very sturdy. Best of all, these eco-friendly diapers have absolutely no smell.

    7
    Frequently Discounted
    Complete Care Baby Diapers (80-Count)
    Cuties

Cuties diapers are gradually becoming more well-known. Another TikTok-trending product, these affordable, hypoallergenic diapers frequently go on sale on Amazon, making them a solid choice for parents looking to try something more eco-friendly.

Of note, the lining does contain vitamin E and botanicals, but no fragrance, dyes, or chlorine.

    8
    Best for Blowouts
    Baby Diapers (180-Count)
    Earth + Eden

Earth + Eden is my personal favorite diaper brand of this entire group. Their diapers are covered in a breathable outer layer that keeps the mess from escaping, all while allowing oxygen to circulate around your baby's sensitive areas. They're also free of lotions, latex, fragrances, and chlorine.

And let me tell you: These diapers are like a vault for poop. I watched my best friend's baby toddle all around our temple after service, running away from everyone while wearing a completely full diaper. However, there were no leaks or blowouts up the back of the diaper. It's practically a miracle in and of itself.

    9
    Cutest Prints
    Super Club Box Diapers (160-Count)
    The Honest Company

I have been reviewing Honest Brand diapers since they were first invented, and while I wasn't in love with them during their first iteration, they are now a high-quality, very reliable product.

The prints are some of the cutest on the market. They have a solid subscription service, and the brand's devotees are pretty die-hard.

    10
    Most Well-Known Eco Brand
    Baby Diapers (80-Count)
    Seventh Generation

The original more natural diaper has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Seventh Generation's diapers are available everywhere. They work hard and keep babies dry and clean. Plus, the coupons are plentiful.

This brand is generally one of the first forays parents make into the natural-product market, and they don't disappoint when it comes to absorbency and leakage.
