Exhausted, but can’t sleep? Welcome to pregnancy! Everyone keeps telling me, “Get rest now!” and “Make sure to sleep as much as you can.” Meanwhile, I’m rolling my eyes to myself as I lie awake from about 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. on a regular basis for — what it only seems to me — NO GOOD REASON.
In the beginning of pregnancy, restless-leg syndrome might keep you up (there’s an insanely effective magnesium lotion for that called 8 Sheep Organics). In your second trimester, this super fun phenomenon called “your body preparing you for having a baby” means you’re awake all the live-long night.
By trimester three it’s a combination of needing to pee every 30 minutes, anxiety about the fact you’re having a child, more restless-leg syndrome, and the most fun of them all: body pain. I group-chatted my girlfriends, most of whom have two or three children, for a maternity pillow recommendation. All four moms came back some variety of “GET A SNOOGLE!”

Whatever ails you, I swear, the woman who designed this maternity pillow knows what we pregnant sufferers need.
The Snoogle was developed by a registered nurse who is also a mom. Why does this matter? It means that 1) she knows what pregnant bodies go through, from a medical perspective, during the 10 months of pregnancy and 2) she’s been through it herself. There’s no one more qualified to ensure your body is supported in all the right places as you attempt to drift off to sleep.
What else makes it so great?
- You only need one pillow. Not three. I started out using a simple pillow between my knees to support my hips. That was perfect until I started showing and needed hip, back, and belly support.
- It breathes. Pregnancy comes with the fun inability to regulate your body temperature (i.e., you’re hot, a lot of the time). But the Snoogle is made of polyester, which is created to be breathable, nonabsorbent, lightweight, and durable — and it keeps the price down.
- The original Snoogle comes with a sham-style, machine-washable cover. But it’s snug and therefore a tiny bit challenging to get on and off this funky-shaped pillow.
