There has been some very concerning news lately about the potential safety concerns of processed baby food. A congressional report released on Feb. 4 revealed that several brands of baby food contained potentially harmful levels of heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury.

These are substances that exist naturally in the world, and even in our own bodies, reported Insider. However, the findings noted that while low levels of these metals aren't a cause for concern, an overabundance of these substances can increase a baby's risk for neurotoxicity — or the build up of toxins in the brain — which the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has stated can lead to cognitive and behavioral delays.

All brands included in the report maintain that their products are safe for babies, and fall within regulatory guidelines for how much heavy metals are allowed to be in the food. That doesn't mean parents are going to be comfortable feeding their babies processed baby food when reports like the most recent one are circulating. Many parents will be looking to make their own baby food out of safety concerns. Plus, it's economical, it gives you a measure of control over what your baby is eating, and honestly, it's fun to smugly post about it on Instagram.

It is actually dead simple to make your baby's food. From pureeing their first foods to moving onto more complex blends, it’s not as daunting of a process as you’d think. The editors at Best Products (parents themselves with real-life baby-food chef experience) have put together this fairly exhaustive list of everything you need to make your own baby food, from baby food makers, too food storage, to accessories. Also, with the possible exception of the reusable food pouches, everything on this list will serve multiple purposes in your kitchen, too, adding ease and value to your life with the purchases.

Baby Food Appliances and Kitchenware

You'll need a good blending and pureeing tool (or a few) if you're going to make your own baby food. While baby-food blenders do exist, there is little more those can do beyond blending small amounts of food. The blenders chosen here will serve you for years to come, even after all your babies are chewing their own food.

We've also added an Instant Pot on this list for a few reasons: First, it cooks grains and veggies really quickly, so you can make an entire batch of food at nap time. Second, it cooks meats to tender really easily, and the interior of the pot can handle an immersion blender, skipping a step. Third, once your baby starts eating legumes, the Instant Pot makes soft beans at lightning speed and the beans made in the pot don't have the added sodium of canned beans.

Food Storage

No matter how you're making your baby's food, you're going to need a place to store it. It's a good idea to have some combination of freezer and fresh storage, as well as storage that doubles as a container from which you can feed your baby. Convenience is the name of the game, and these pieces are extremely convenient.

Accessories

This category has a little bit of everything in it — from cleaning kits to baking mats, and it's all going to make your life so much easier.

Safe Baby Food

OK, sometimes, you're going to need premade baby food. Here are some excellent choices that didn't make the congressional hit list.
