There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Butterfly Superfoods Nut Butter

Tester: Danielle St. Pierre, lover of nut butters with short ingredient lists

The Brief: The food media world is nuts about nuts. From nut-based plant milk alternatives to innovative nut snacks, it's a glorious time for nut lovers. So, when Butterfly reached out to me with their new line of superfood nut butters, I was excited to crack into these cute and colorful little jars.

Butterfly is revolutionizing the ever-growing nut butter space. Since some consumers avoid traditional peanut butter due to allergies, or they just desire a cleaner, more wholesome ingredient list, the brand offers plenty of alternative nut butter options for every palate.

Butterfly's line of tasty superfood nut butters are made with a short list of "bullsh*t-free ingredients" like walnuts, macadamia nuts, cashews, and MCT oil — a plant-based fat usually derived from either coconuts or palm kernel oil that is great for brain function, heart health, and sustained energy.

In a nutshell, Butterfly is on a mission to simplify the journey to nourishment. These nut butters are all organic, raw, vegan, sugar-free, and both keto- and paleo-friendly. They come in four yummy flavor varieties: Classic, Rosemary, Chocolate Reishi, and Cinnamon Vanilla (my personal favorite).

Each flavor variety is thoughtfully formulated to not just taste delicious, but to serve a purpose, from boosting brain function to improving gut health to boosting hair and skin health. The rosemary flavor, for example — the standout of the bunch, if you ask me — is an epicurean delight, infused with rosemary leaves and unrefined sea salt. Beyond being a popular aromatic herb, rosemary also packs a long list of potential health benefits, from boosting hair growth to helping memory function in the brain.

My go-to flavor from the pack, though, is the slightly sweeter cinnamon vanilla variety. Sweetened with natural monk fruit and made with the addition of vanilla extract, unrefined sea salt, and cinnamon, this nut butter is the perfect smear for sliced apples or celery sticks. The sea salt adds just the right amount of savory dimension to its otherwise sweet flavor profile, making this variety super versatile for adults and kiddos alike.

Let's talk about texture, since it's an important factor in nut butter world. These nut butters (much like most nut butter brands) will have a layer of liquid separation when you first crack open the jar. This is actually perfectly normal and common in any natural nut butter, since most natural nut butters lack the artificial ingredients like palm oil, which usually act as a stabilizer.

So, you'll need to give this butter a good stir before your first use. Once you refrigerate, you'll be good to go for the next time you crack into the jar 5 minutes later. The texture is a bit grainier than you might be used to if you're a smooth peanut butter type of person. It's actually similar to cookie dough, which makes it even tastier in my opinion.

If you're a little leery about spending $16 for a 9-ounce glass jar of nut butter, I feel your pain. But I still encourage you to try this brand — it's well worth the slightly higher price point for a versatile, wholesome pantry staple.

Also noteworthy: In addition to their ongoing donation of a percentage of profits to Slow Money, a nonprofit that supports local food systems, Butterfly will be donating 5% of sales to BLMLA for the month of June to support justice for Black lives.

Closing Argument: Try Butterfly Superfoods Nut Butter if you're tired of your old peanut butter spread, on the prowl for a functional snack, or looking to support a new, charitable food brand. Snack time just got so much better.
