With International Women's Day and National Women's History Month upon us, it feels more important than ever to shine a light on the female entrepreneurs who are not only thriving in the food and beverage industry, but are owning it. We are here for it.
One sector of the food and beverage industry where we continue to see women shine is in the world of winemaking. Within the traditionally white, male-dominated landscape of wine professionals — from sommeliers to winemakers — you'll find some badass lady vintners who are actively turning this outdated norm on its head. These women are fighting for better access, inclusion, transparency, and diversity in the wine industry.
In an effort to highlight these truly badass entrepreneurial women in the industry, we wanted to call out 12 delicious wines by women winemakers to try this year. Bottoms-up to these boss ladies who are showing us that time's up.
Disrupting the predominantly white, male winemaking landscape in groundbreaking ways, African American winemaking sisters Andréa and Robin McBride are producing premium wines in Marlborough, New Zealand and California's Central Coast.
After spending their childhoods on separate continents and re-connecting as young adults, Andréa and Robin McBride have a truly special story, and they now lead the largest African American winery in the U.S.
The McBride Sisters Collection Black Girl Magic Trio is the brand's most popular set, including their 2020 Riesling, their 2020 Rosé, and their 2018 Zinfandel. All three wines are fruit forward and well-balanced in flavor and body.
With the motto “made by chicks,” this female-owned canned wine brand is one for the girls. Crisp, dry, and with just a touch of carbonation, their canned California Rosé Wine has juicy watermelon notes, a good amount of acidity, and 0 grams of sugar, making this my pick for editor’s choice. The newly launched California Sauvignon Blanc and pinot grigio varietals are also not to be missed.
Toss a variety pack of these cute and colorful canned wines into your tote bag for your next hike or backyard barbecue this spring.

Who What Wear's Katherine Power and Cameron Diaz collaborated on this vegan, clean wine brand, Avaline. The white and rosé are delicious, but their red wine is what we would recommend most from the lineup. Light- to medium-bodied, with hints of cherry and spice, this easygoing red tastes best just slightly chilled.
Winemaker Debbie Juergenson, of Apothic Wines in the Central Valley of California, started her career as a geologist and researcher, and she brings her scientific background straight into the wines she now creates.
Inspired by "Apotheca," a mythical place where wine was blended and stored in 13th-century Europe, Apothic wines are made from a unique blend of grapes to create intense aromas and bold flavors — a total sensory treat.
The winery's first limited-release varietal, Apothic's cab packs intense fruity flavor and is quite nicely balanced.
We're big fans of boxed wine (clearly), but wine in a bag is our new jam. If you haven't heard of female-founded sustainable wine subscription brand Maivino yet, lean in. Each pouch contains two full bottles (that's 10 glasses) of delicious Columbia Valley, Washington-sourced sauvignon blanc. The brands also offers a rosé and pinot noir varietal.
Made with no additives and minimal intervention, not only are these wines incredibly easy to bring anywhere, but they also reduce wine's carbon footprint by 80%. We are all about this brand's girl power (and that pour spout).
Jamieson Ranch Vineyards' head winemaker Linda Trotta started her career in winemaking over three decades ago in California's Sonoma Valley and continues to be a trailblazer in the industry. Trotta also serves as chair of Wine Women — a professional organization that advocates for the advancement of women working in the wine industry.
This 2016 Whiplash Red Blend from Jamieson Ranch Vineyards is lush and medium-bodied with notes of dark cherry, stone fruits, and figs. Serve this with slow-cooked pork tacos, charcuterie, or barbecue fare and toast to women in wine.
Female winemaker Pauline Lhote grew up in Champagne, France, and she spent years working in the industry before joining Chandon in Napa Valley in 2006. Needless to say, Pauline is an expert in crafting beautiful sparkling wines, and this Chandon California Rosé is a perfect example of her expertise.
The ideal bubbly to sip during any spring celebration or at brunch with girlfriends, Chandon Rosé has a dramatic pink hue and intense flavors of ripe strawberries and juicy watermelon.
You're likely already familiar with ubiquitous wine brand Barefoot Wine, but we bet you didn't know its head winemaker happens to be a boss lady. Jennifer Wall joined Barefoot Wine as head winemaker in 1995, and since she joined the winery, the brand has grown from crafting just four wines to over 30 fun and fresh varieties.
Barefoot's Bubbly Brut Rosé is a dry, traditional offering with aromas of fresh flowers and notes of red raspberries, cherries, and pomegranate. You'll definitely want to stock up on a few bottles of this fresh and juicy bubbly for your next cheese or cookie pairing.
Enologist-turned-winemaker Stephanie Jacobs heads up Napa Valley's popular Cakebread Cellars — a winery she's been working with since 2004. Highly rated by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, this splurgeworthy merlot is luscious with notes of juicy black fruit.
You may be familiar with E.J. Gallo's massive portfolio of large-format, affordable wines, but we bet you haven't stumbled upon their Gallo Signature Series. Winemaker Gina Gallo is the woman behind this curated signature series of higher-end select varietal wines within her family's massive wine portfolio, and she's an incredibly active driving force in the brand's success overall.
This 2014 Gallo Signature Series Chardonnay is a prime example of Gina's influence on her family's winemaking legacy. With aromas of vanilla and citrus, this wine has bright notes of crisp apple, lemon meringue, and ginger — it's a delicious and decadent expression of Sonoma's Russian River Valley region.
