Since our thirsty food & drink editor’s cup runneth over, here’s a space for her to spill the tea on all of the greatest, tastiest, and trendiest sips. There's really only one thing you'll find here ... NO BAD DRINKS!

My Current Drink Crush: The Wonderful Wine Co's Orange Wine

Why This Drink Matters: You may have seen some pretty orange-hued wines recently popping up on your Insta feed or at your local wine shop. To be clear: Orange wine is a color and style of wine and not an entirely new category, but it's gained traction in the natural wine and even the canned wine space as more drinkers are paying much closer attention to how responsibly their wine is actually made.

Enter: The Wonderful Wine Co, the funkier sister of popular wine-subscription brand Winc, offering red, white, and orange wines that are clean, sustainable, and vegan-friendly. Although the term “clean wine” can actually be a bit murky and misleading, The Wonderful Wine Co is doing it right when it comes to their commitment to sustainability from grape to glass, from the vineyards down to the 100% renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable corks.

WWC offers convenient three-packs ($60), six-packs ($110), and 12-packs ($215) of their varieties. In my Starter Pack, I recently fell in love with the brand's orange wine — a 2019 California Malvasia Bianca (technically a skin-contact white wine). I found it to be superbly crisp and perfect for these chilly fall nights as we start easing into the colder months.

How We Met: I'm no stranger to Winc as a food & drink editor who covers the newest and most popular wine subscription services and trends, so when a little wino-birdie mentioned a crunchy new sister, The Natural Wine Co, I had to sample the goods for myself.

I sampled a red syrah, the brand's white offering, and this orange wine, and I was most in love with the orange wine from the gang. The vibe of the brand is a little bit quirky, witchy, and mysterious, which is honestly right up my alley, but the orange wine stood out as something a little bit more special to carry me into these cooler, crisper fall nights.

Tasting Notes: Taste-wise, orange wines usually have a similar tannic structure to a younger red wine, with a slightly mellower flavor. Orange wines are a bit “meatier” than a white wine made from the same grape; they will be bolder, more savory, funkier.

This is exactly the case with The Wonderful Wine Co's Malvasia Bianca. It's a gorgeous pale peach hue poured in the glass, and I immediately smelled grapefruit and melon on the nose and got a nice punch of citrus with honey on the palate. It's just juicy enough to be refreshing on a warmer autumn evening, but there's acidity there, too, that makes this orange wine incredibly food-friendly and versatile. Try it for yourself this fall. No tricks.
