There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Allbirds Tree Dasher Sneakers

The Tester: Jennifer Hussein, an athletic novice with extremely flat feet

The Brief: I'll be honest, it's been a while since I last stepped into a gym — and due to the public health situation, it's probably been a while for you too. But while binging Netflix and staying wrapped in blankets is fun, I've decided that I should at least try to get back on my fitness grind now that I have the time.

But, getting back in shape means having the right gear for it. Sure, I could go the at-home yoga route, which would require nothing more than a yoga mat and stretchy pants, but my fitness forte has always been running. I needed to find a sneaker that could withstand my usually-long runs while giving some added support to my wide, flat feet.

Enter: the Allbirds Tree Dasher, the latest sneaker to join the beloved Allbirds family. These just-launched sneakers really step the game up for athletic footwear. Not only are they designed for comfort during your jog, run, or sprint, but they're also one of the most sustainable and eco-conscious shoes on the market.

While most sneakers and workout shoes are made from plastic, these will make you and Mother Earth feel good — they're made from sugarcane, renewable eucalyptus, and merino wool. While developing the shoes, Allbirds also tapped both professional and amateur athletes to test them out, making sure that the Tree Dasher sneakers provide enough comfort and durability for any level of activity.

Now, here's the thing: I'm a size 8, but my feet are wide and flat. So, finding a good sneaker that can accommodate the width and provide arch support is usually impossible. But amazingly, the Tree Dasher sneakers fit me like a dream. The soles of these sneakers felt like I was walking on air, and the stretchy wool material perfectly shaped to my wide-set feet while letting my toes breathe.

One quick, mile-long run later, these sneakers still felt comfy on my soles and heels. Usually, my feet cramp up a bit after running, and uncomfortable shoes can make the pain unbearable, but no swollen toes here. I even took them out for an hour-long walk around town, and the soles of my feet still felt cozy and in place.

Closing Argument: Oh yeah, the Allbirds Tree Dasher sneakers are worth it. Whether you're training for a marathon or just running — OK, walking down the block to your local grocery store, these eco-conscious shoes are pure bliss on your feet. Take that, plastic.
