Negative Underwear’s Sieve Demi Made Me Actually Like Wearing a Bra Again

Minimalist, pared-down pieces you’ll forget you’re even wearing.

There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Negative Underwear

The Tester: Danielle St. Pierre, hater of most bras she's ever worn

The Brief: When it comes to wearing a bra, 95% of the time I will opt to not wear one unless it feels completely necessary. Much like many other women who struggle with finding bras that feel comfortable and fit correctly, my experience is that most bras make me feel constricted instead of supported. So, as I've transitioned to working from home, social distancing, and generally interacting face-to-face with other humans much less often, you could say that my motivation to wear a bra has mostly vanished.

However, the reality is that sometimes life hands you social or professional situations in which it's just necessary to wear a bra. Whether it's for a virtual work meeting, a trip to a public park, or the rare occasion that I actually get dressed up, sometimes I need more support.

This brings me to Negative Underwear, a female-founded, direct-to-consumer line of women's intimate apparel, loungewear, and sleepwear, and the only brand of bras and underwear I've actually enjoyed wearing. After spotting the brand on the ’gram and falling in love with their brand imagery — real women’s bodies, real cellulite, real love handles, and nipples — I decided I had to give them a try. Negative has completely changed my stance on wearing a bra with their pared down, super minimalist yet supportive separates.

I spoke with Marissa Vosper, cofounder of Negative Underwear, to get her take on the brand's mission:

"Our philosophy is guided by the idea that less is more. In a lingerie world of frills, bows, push-up and lace, we're intentionally easy and pared back. To put it simply, we make fewer, better things that look, fit and feel amazing. Our goal is to make garments that help women feel amazing in their own skin, regardless of whether someone else is lucky enough to see."

In a lingerie world of frills, bows, push-up and lace, we're intentionally easy and pared back.

So far, I've tried Negative's Sieve Demi Bra, matching Sieve Thong, Whipped High Rise underwear, and Silky Bodysuit, and I literally look forward to wearing all of these sexy, pared down pieces, even if I'm just lounging at home. I love how breathable and soft the Sieve's honeycomb micromesh material feels against my skin, and the demi bra actually makes me feel nice and supported thanks to the underwire. I highly recommend the buttery-soft Whipped Collection as well for featherweight pieces to sleep in. The ribbed high-rise underwear literally feels like soft baby clothes and is incredibly thin.

Also noteworthy: Negative is all about body positivity and is size-inclusive, with bras that range from cup sizes A-DDD and band sizes from 30-38. However, I will say that if you have a much larger chest or generally prefer padded or push-up bras, this is not the brand for you. These pieces are for ladies who like minimalism in their undergarments. You will see your nipples through the Sieve Collection bras. If you're not really a free-the-nip kind of gal, you might not love this vibe.

Negative is all about making complicated things feel uncomplicated. As a brand founded by women, for women, I can safely say that their intimate pieces make me feel sexy, supported, and — most importantly — comfortable in my own skin.

Closing Argument: If you, too, dislike wearing bras, I encourage you to give Negative Underwear a try. These pieces are so pared-down, minimalist, and comfortable that you’ll forget you’re even wearing underwear.
