      What to Consider

Before you start your search for the best sateen sheets, here are a few basics to keep in mind:

      ➥ Sateen Versus Percale

Cotton sateen and percale sheets are typically sold side-by-side at bedding retailers, so you may wonder what the difference between them is. While they may look nearly identical, there is a discernible difference in the feel, and it all comes down to how they're made.

Sateen sheets are typically woven with a three-over-one weave. If you pinch the corner of a sateen sheet and rub your thumb along it, you should feel smoothness back and forth, but more friction up and down — this is due to the elongated weft stitches. When the very same thread is stitched in a one-over-one weave, it results in a percale texture. Percale feels more like a crisp button-down shirt — it is airy and light, but not silky. Sateen has more of a weighty drape than percale, but it glides across the skin more smoothly.

      ➥ Thread Count

This number is usually listed as one of the material specs for a set of sheets. It pertains to the number of threads woven within 1 square inch of the material. The higher the number of threads per square inch, the higher the thread count, and the more tightly woven that material will be.

In general, we're noticing an industry trend toward lower thread counts, which possibly reflects a tide change favoring lighter, more casual, and cooler bedding. Still, many brands are frustratingly opaque about their sheets' thread counts and tend to bury this information in their FAQ pages or leave it off of their sites altogether. We are including this spec where available only because it can be a helpful differentiator in terms of material weight.

Admittedly, it can be tough choosing the best set of sateen sheets because these products are pretty similar from brand to brand. Some factors that may sway your decision include the available color choices, price (including any deep discounts from getting a bedding bundle), the third-party certifications for organic cotton or chemical-free construction, and, of course, what shopping guides like this one have to say.

After thoroughly researching these sateen sheets and even having the chance to personally test several sets for a year or more, we've composed our list of the very best sateen sheets to buy online.

          Luxe Core Sheet Set
          Brooklinen

          Key Specs

          • Thread count: 480
          • Color choices: 19
          • Available Sizes: Twin through California king (split king sold here)

The Brooklinen Luxe Sheet Set is nearly perfect in every way. They may be one of the most-reviewed sheets on the internet, but it's one of the few that actually lives up to the hype.

These sheets are made of long-staple Oeko Tex-certified cotton and woven into 480 thread count material. They're actually the thickest set in this guide, but there's nothing heavy or stifling about these sheets. They're smooth, silky, and not see-though whatsoever. The pillowcases feature an envelope flap that keeps the pillow from sliding out, and there are even handy tags on the inside of the sheets that denote where the sides and top are.

I first started testing Brooklinen's Luxe Sheets in 2016, and my original set is still going strong all of these years later. The material feels great, although after 6 years, the fabric's luster isn't quite what it used to be and the colors have faded slightly. I've never experienced fraying, wearing, or degradation in this material beyond the usual softening that's expected with countless rounds of washing.

We're naming these sateen sheets as our best overall since they are exceptionally well made for a fair price. They're also available in many different bundle permutations. Also, if you're not a top-sheet person, you can opt for their Starter Set instead, which is between $20-55 cheaper, depending on your chosen size.

          • Available Sizes: Twin through California king (including split king)

Boll & Branch's sateen sheets set the bar high. The material is soft, lustrous, and surprisingly lightweight.

Although this set is pricey, the reasoning behind it is more transparent than most brands. These sheets have third-party GOTS, Oeko-Tex, and fair-trade certifications, which means that they're truly organic cotton, were constructed without harmful chemicals and pesticides, and comprise materials that were farmed and woven by people making a living wage.

Reviewers overwhelmingly give Boll & Branch's sheets top marks, and along with the nice feel, these sheets are repeatedly touted for their deep pockets. Their 17-inch depth easily fits on any type of mattress, even when layered with a foam topper.

          Key Specs

          • Thread count: 300
          • Color choices: 1 (other collections have more color options)
          • Available Sizes: Twin through California king (including split king)

10 Grove's sheets are undeniably lovely, and their sateen set is comfy and breathable upon first night's use — there's no breaking in necessary. We also love how cool these are to sleep with. They are definitely great summer-weight sheets.

If you're dedicated to shopping for American-made products, this is the bedding brand for you. The factory that makes 10 Grove's sheets is based in Texas, and all of their production is on demand. This means that while there may be a short waiting period between order and shipment, the product is crafted just for you.

The most basic version of this Oeko Tex-certified set comes with just a fitted sheet and pair of pillowcases, though you can add on a flat sheet and duvet cover for an extra cost. Plus, if you're curious about trying the feel before you buy, 10 Grove offers swatches for $5 each.

          • Available Sizes: Twin through California king (including split king)

Lovers of organic cotton and sateen will adore this set from Looma. The feel is soft, smooth, and luxurious, and I've found it to change even more for the better after a few washes.

They are the very definition of simple luxury. The quality is comparable to that of the aforementioned sheets from Boll & Branch, and although the two sets have the same starting price, Looma's sheets are slightly less expensive for larger sizes.

These premium sateen sheets are Oeko Tex-, GOTS-, and fair trade-certified, with materials sourced from the Himalayan basin of northern India.

          • Available Sizes: Twin through California king

Parachute's sateen sheets are made from Oeko Tex-certified, long-staple Egyptian cotton that's strong yet soft. They have a lightweight texture that's perfect for anyone who has a tendency to sleep hot.

Along with the smooth, gorgeous feel, we’re big fans of Parachute’s eye for design. Their pillowcases have a horizontal envelope enclosure, which not only keeps the pillow in place all night, but it makes your bed looks tidier. We’re also pretty sure Parachute helmed the “no top sheet” movement that’s become the standard across the industry, but you can add a top sheet onto this set for $80-110 more if you’ve gotta have it.
