McDonald’s Sweet ‘N’ Sour, Creamy Ranch, Honey, Spicy Buffalo, Tangy BBQ, and Honey Mustard dipping sauces are being joined by a returning option — at least for a limited time! Beginning this month, you can get Szechuan Sauce for all your dipping needs.
McDonald’s first released Szechuan Sauce in 1998 as a product tie to Disney’s Mulan (1998) film. Since then, it has only been brought back three times — including in 2017 and 2018 — as a limited-edition offering. We can all agree that a total of four times in 24 years is not nearly enough, so this return is very much welcomed.
The only catch here is that in order to get your hands on the Szechuan Sauce, you need to order exclusively through the McDonald’s app. Starting on March 31, when you’re on the app, you’ll be given the option to choose it as a dipping sauce option for Chicken McNuggets. Not ordering nuggets? You can purchase up to five sauces à la carte.
So what is it about Szechuan Sauce that has fans going wild over the years? According to Merriam-Webster, Szechuan means “of, relating to, or being a style of Chinese cooking that is spicy, oily, and especially peppery.” McDonald’s describes it as having a savory and slightly sweet taste, and notes of soy, garlic, ginger, and mild vinegar. When you put all those factors together, you get a dipping sauce worthy of a pack of 20-piece chicken nuggets.
To make the limited release that much more special, the sauce packs feature golden foil in five different designs that, when lined up, spell “Szechuan.” Obviously, we have to collect them all.
