Best Overall
TCL 6-Series 65-Inch 4K Roku TV
TCL

This smart TV delivers a phenomenal picture despite its low price. It supports HDR, which produces a bright, lifelike image that's full of color. Best of all, it runs Roku as its platform, which offers an easy-to-use interface and pretty much every streaming app you could ask for.

The included remote lets you search for shows or movies with your voice, and it has hot keys for all your favorite streaming apps like Hulu and Netflix. We think that this TV from TCL is an excellent value considering its superb picture, slew of smart features, numerous ports, and ease of use. Our biggest complaint is that it doesn’t offer support for AirPlay like models from Vizio, Samsung, and LG TVs do, meaning it’s not as simple to cast content on your phone to its large 65-inch display.

David Katzmaier, CNET's home theater expert, said the TV offers the best picture quality for the money and that no television in its price range performs better. We agree wholeheartedly and are fans of its slim bezel, its vibrant picture, and overall premium aesthetic. It’s sub-$1,000 price is pretty great, too!

The Most Reliable 4K TV
Sony X950G 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV
Sony

If you're looking for a best-in-class, HDR-compatible smart TV that offers a truly incredible, lifelike picture and stellar audio, look no further than this one from Sony. It uses Android TV as its platform, which packs all your favorite streaming apps and then some. Because the TV has the Google Play Store, you can pick from thousands of apps to download to extend the TV's functionality.

The TV also has Chromecast and AirPlay 2, so content can be casted from your smartphone or tablet directly to the TV. The included remote has a button that lets you easily access Netflix, and a microphone for voice search. You can also ask the TV questions or use it to control your smart devices, thanks to its Google Assistant support.

Compared to an OLED TV, this LED TV delivers image quality that’s nearly as good, but it doesn’t produce black shades quite as deep, and it’s much brighter — making it an excellent pick for a room with several windows. It also isn’t as susceptible to burn-in like OLED TVs are.

Image burn — which isn’t covered under warranty for most brands — is when a persistent part of the image on your screen (like a logo or scoreboard) remain on your display, when they shouldn't be visible even after you switch apps or turn the channel.

Although the Sony is pricier than most other TVs on our lineup — and even some OLED TVs — Sony TVs are proven to have a higher reliability and owner satisfaction within the first 5 years of ownership, according to survey data from Consumer Reports.

Both Consumer Reports and Wirecutter have named this TV as a top pick for its impressive image quality and good user interface. We think it’s a safe bet!

The Best 65-Inch TV on the Cheap
TCL 5-Series 65-Inch 4K Roku TV
TCL

The latest TCL 5-Series 4K TV sometimes reaches prices under $500 — a rarity for displays this large. With Roku TV on board, the device offers easy access to all of today’s popular streaming services out of the box. It's even compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands.

The TV supports for both HDR10 and Dolby Vision content, which is a crucial feature for a TV these days. Movies and shows using both high dynamic range standards are becoming increasingly common on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and streaming apps like Disney+. And for gamers, there's a dedicated mode for enhancing your video games.

The TCL 5-Series ships with Roku’s incredibly intuitive remote control. You can control the TV with your voice by pressing a button on the remote control, which allows you to search for content and even change inputs on the TV.

Best for Gaming
Samsung RU8000 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LCD TV
Samsung

The Samsung RU8000 LCD 4K TV has stunning picture quality, HDR support, and four HDMI ports — plenty for all your favorite consoles. More importantly, it features built-in FreeSync tech, meaning it’ll consistently display the correct number of frames per second while connected to FreeSync-compatible consoles like the Xbox One X.

It's a great TV for gamers because of its superb motion handling. We think that it's one of the nicest-looking TVs you can buy. It has an extremely thin profile with narrow bezels, plus a sharp stand that'll complement any room in your home.

We also considered the pricier VIZIO P-Series Quantum X as a top gaming pick given its stellar low input lag, bright display, and excellent contrast ratio. However, that model has worse viewing angles and doesn’t support that FreeSync variable refresh rate we previously mentioned.

If you’re willing to spend more than $1,000 consider splurging for the Samsung Q70R, which is another excellent TV for gaming. We think the cheaper RU8000 offers gamers more bang for their buck, but if you want an even better picture for your HDR-supported game system, you won’t be disappointed in the Q70R.

For the Best Picture Possible
Sony A9G 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV
Sony

If you have deep pockets and image quality is the most important characteristic when shopping for a smart TV, you can't go wrong with the Sony A9G. It is an OLED TV that offers much deeper black shades and truer colors than its LCD and LED counterparts. Review editors from RTings agree that it it’s a remarkable OLED TV that delivers a realistic picture, excellent wide viewing angles, and killer performance for movie-watching.

As you'd expect, this gorgeous 4K Ultra HD TV supports HDR content, and it's equipped with all the latest smart features and plenty of ports (you get four HDMI and three USB). It runs Android TV, giving you access to a massive ecosystem of apps and 4K content, as well as the Google Assistant. Sony also says it will support Apple AirPlay 2 with a later software update.

The more affordable LG C9 was our previous “best picture” pick, but after conducting a brand analysis and reviewing reliability- and customer satisfaction data, we determined that Sony is the more reliable offering. Given that OLED TVs have the risk of image burn-in, we think spending a little bit more money for the Sony is in your best interest.

Best for Bright Rooms
Samsung Q80R 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart QLED TV
Samsung

This TV’s massive display panel delivers jaw-dropping performance and one of the brightest pictures in the business. Its screen even features an anti-reflective filter that reduces reflections from your lights inside or the sun.

Compared against other QLED TVs, this one has impressive local dimming support, a wider color gamut, and better viewing angles. The Q80R is a remarkable TV that’s truly a jack of all trades. It’s perfect for movie watching, TV viewing, and gaming.

If the Q80R is a little out of reach for your budget, the Vizio P-Series Quantum still looks superb and is a couple hundred dollars cheaper, but its interface isn’t as inviting or as easy-to-use as Samsung’s. Samsung is also a more reliable brand, according to an analysis done by Consumer Reports.

7 Samsung The Frame 65-Inch 4K QLED TV
Samsung

The Frame 4K TV by Samsung has a groundbreaking design, which instantly transforms it into a digital frame that displays beautiful artwork. There are many art pieces that the TV comes with; you can even add your own photos or purchase more artwork if you wish. The Frame has a built-in motion sensor, which activates its screen when you enter the room.

As its name suggests, the TV looks like a picture frame when mounted on the wall. We really like that you customize its finish by choosing from a variety of available colors. The TV's power cord is also slim and transparent for a clutter-free look.

The picture quality of The Frame is solid, though not on par with similarly priced rivals (its considerable price tag is driven by the unique design). Of course, the TV comes with Samsung's intuitive smart platform with access to all popular streaming services.
